And what they look like is army propaganda. I picked up the latest Godzilla film at the video store today (Support your local commerce, kids!) expecting to see a lot of monster on monster fighting, but they keep interrupting it every 5 or so minutes to give us soldiers doing soldier-y things and talking soldier-y. I know that the entire movie can't be all monster fighting, that it has to have a human element, but, 15 years back, that human element was the plucky reporter who totally saw it coming, the unorthodox researcher that got told off by his superiors or the odd cameraman who nearly got stomped, and it was good because it had at least a minimum of variety. Now, the human element is in uniform, delivering rousing one liners around a map table, jumping out of a military carrier against a blazing sunset, running in formation and taking cover (from a giant lizard who could breathe a whole block out of existence by accident) and being about as useful as you'd expect people would be around giant monster fights. But those 30 seconds before the monster fight, you take them and add a bitching sound track, and you got the perfect TV spot, because that's what this stuff is. Huh, guess I'm not a big fan of the military.

When the advanced aliens break down the history of human existance 90% of their material will be Godzilla and Dracula. What a shame to know our vast existance will be viewed in history as a steaming pile of bull shit.

As far as Monster movies go I find Pacific Rim to be a great piece of entertainment. Frankly, the connection between shitty movies and the military is a bit weak considering there is much stronger facts available to attack both.

I agree, but Pacific Rim was one of those movies where the military actually makes sense because it's properly equipped to fight the monsters. In fact, it's the only thing they fight. Near the end of Godzilla, however, you have a bunch of guys straight out of Black Hawk Down opening fire against one of the Mothras and it does precisely jack shit. I guess what I wanted to say is, why were they even necessary? Why not focus on more monster fighting or some human characters that you can actually distinguish between one another?

The previous major Godzilla movie was TERRIBLE. But that's more because of things like Godzilla changing size every five minutes, cheesy dialogue, and lazy errors. But I do get what you're saying. The older movie had unique and interesting characters using creative solutions to find and stop Godzilla. It wasn't just "use more gun."

Exactly! I'm not saying it was good, it was actually painful to watch even for a 10 years old, but it failed because it was poorly made. The new one I actually thought was pretty good overall, but it lacked in that area, and that became even more evident because all the movies are doing.

Transformers, for example, wasn't just a series of three feature length ads for GM, there is a part in the third one, I believe, where the soldiers at the beggining of the first movie get together with LaBeouf's character in a 1970 Chevelle and drive to an occupied city while flinging jargon at the viewer to fight the Decepticons using all the weaponry that doesn't work on them in the first place. It's heavy handed even in Michael Bay terms...

That's why I don't really like watching movies, or even football.
